Welcome to the Texas License To Carry Training. We’ll work with you to educate you on Laws and requirements for carrying a handgun in Texas.
In order to minimize your wait time, we recommend you start by registering with Texas DPS and scheduling your fingerprints. The Texas DPS site is https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/. You should also familiarize yourself with the Texas LTC related laws http://dps.texas.gov/InternetForms/Forms/CHL-16.pdf. Don’t worry about memorizing the booklet, it can be a little overwhelming. We’ll go through the requirements in class in plain english.
No handguns permitted in the classroom during the classroom training.
Classroom Training:
The overall objective of this course is to educate students on the responsibilities and laws applicable to handgun license holders. The class is taught in 4 modules requiring a minimum of 4 lecture hours. The modules are as follows:
- Laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force
- Handgun use and safety, including use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns
- Non‐violent dispute resolution
- Proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child
After the lecture is completed, we will review the material followed by a 25 question test. You must obtain a score of 70% or greater to pass the classroom portion of the training.
Proficiency Demonstration:
For the Proficiency Demonstration, you will need to bring:
- 50 Rounds of Ammunition (factory preferred)
- Your handgun
- Eye Protection
- Ear Protection

- To successfully qualify, shooters must complete this course with a minimum score of 70% (175 out of possible 250). Note: Most shooters are able to pass with the first two distances. Up to 200 points are available at those two distances.
- An applicant must be able to demonstrate, at a minimum, the degree of proficiency that is required to effectively operate a handgun of .32 caliber or above. The student must be able to safely load, unload, and manipulate the safety features of his/her weapon during this demonstration period.
- No optical enhancers can be used by the student during the proficiency demonstration. (No lasers, holographic sights, scopes, etc.).
- The student must complete the entire course of fire.
- Students are not allowed to “make up” rounds that are not fired within the allotted time, including malfunctions.
